1956 Parliamentary General Election

In the 1956 election in which the SLFP led leftist coalition swept to power, the FP won 5.39% of the popular vote and 10 out of 95 seats in the Sri Lankan parliament.
The ACTC won just one seat. The FP became the dominant party in the Tamil districts and remained so for two decades.
